Make Space for Baby-Led Play

By Down Syndrome Digital ·

Suggested age: 0–3 months

A small moment of play

Play does not need a schedule or a goal. Choose a time when your baby is awake, comfortable, and within your supervision.

Try it together

1. Settle somewhere comfortable

Choose a stable place where you can stay close and focus on your baby. Follow any individual positioning guidance from your child’s care team.

2. Offer one gentle invitation

Use your familiar voice, sing a short tune, or show one age-appropriate toy that you can keep safely in your hand.

3. Pause and follow your baby’s lead

Your baby might look, listen, move, stay still, or turn away. There is no need to repeat an action or redirect their attention. Pause or finish if your baby seems unsettled.

What to remember

Your comfort matters too. A brief, relaxed moment is enough; this is not an exercise or a milestone practice.

A gentle reminder

Keep active supervision and follow the toy maker’s age and safety guidance. This is a play idea, not therapy or a developmental assessment. Ask your child’s healthcare professional about individual positioning or developmental concerns.
