Notice What Engages Your Baby

Suggested age: 0–3 months
Follow what your baby notices
This guide is an invitation to observe what interests your baby, not a test of gaze, hearing, or development.
Try it together
1. Start with a comfortable moment
Choose a time when your baby is awake and settled. Keep them in a comfortable, supervised position that follows any guidance from your child’s care team.
2. Offer one gentle invitation
You might use your familiar voice or a simple, age-appropriate toy. Keep objects at a comfortable distance, stay with your baby, and skip the object if you are unsure whether it is safe.
3. Notice, then pause
Your baby may look, listen, move, make a sound, stay still, or look away. There is no need to move an object repeatedly or wait for a particular response. Pause or stop if your baby seems unsettled.
What to remember
Interest can change from moment to moment. Watching quietly is also a way to spend time together.
A gentle reminder
Every baby responds in their own way. This is not a vision or hearing check. If you have questions about your baby’s responses or development, speak with your child’s healthcare professional.
