Pause and Listen to Your Baby’s Sounds
By Down Syndrome Digital ·
Leave room for a reply
Talking together does not depend on your baby making a particular sound. A quiet pause can be part of the moment too.
Try it together
1. Choose a calm moment
When your baby is awake and comfortable, sit nearby and use a familiar voice.
2. Offer a few words or a tune
Say one short phrase, hum a little melody, or describe something you are doing. Keep your voice relaxed.
3. Pause and notice
Your baby might make a sound, move, stay quiet, or look away. Let the pause last as long as feels comfortable; there is no need to call repeatedly or prompt a response.
What to remember
There is no sound your baby needs to make for the interaction to count. You can enjoy listening without trying to interpret or measure it.
A gentle reminder
This is shared communication, not speech therapy or an assessment. If you have questions about your baby’s communication, speak with your child’s healthcare professional.
