Share a Calm, Face-to-Face Moment

By Down Syndrome Digital ·

Suggested age: 0–3 months

A moment to share

Face-to-face interaction can be a gentle way to connect when your baby is comfortable. There is no need to prompt a smile or wait for a particular response.

Try it together

1. Find a comfortable view

Settle where your baby can comfortably hear you and, if they choose, see your face. Follow any positioning guidance from your child’s care team.

2. Offer a warm hello

Use your familiar voice, a short phrase, or a gentle smile. Keep enough space for your baby to feel comfortable; there is no need to move closer or hold their gaze.

3. Let your baby set the pace

Pause and notice what your baby does. They may look, move, make a sound, smile, or take a break. Respond warmly if it feels welcome, then finish whenever your baby seems ready.

What to remember

The value is in sharing a calm moment, not in getting a smile back. No particular response is required.

A gentle reminder

Babies develop and communicate in different ways and at different times. This guide is not a milestone checklist or a treatment plan. If you have questions about your baby’s development, speak with your child’s healthcare professional.
