Talk, Pause, and Connect with Your Baby

A small moment together

Try one simple idea when your baby is awake and comfortable. This is an invitation to connect, not a lesson your baby needs to complete.

Try it together

1. Find a comfortable moment

Choose a time when your baby seems settled and alert. Use a position that feels comfortable and follows any guidance from your child’s care team.

2. Use your familiar voice

Say a short phrase, hum a gentle tune, or repeat a familiar word. Keep your voice relaxed and give your baby time to take it in.

3. Pause and notice

Leave a quiet pause. Your baby might look, move, make a sound, stay still, or turn away. Notice what happens, respond gently if your baby seems comfortable, and let the moment end when they need a break.

What to remember

A quiet pause is part of the conversation. Your baby does not need to make a sound or look at you for the moment to count.

A gentle reminder

Babies communicate in different ways. These ideas are not a milestone checklist or a treatment plan. If you have questions about your baby’s communication or development, speak with your child’s healthcare professional.
